Overview

The Delivery‑Based Internal Auditor will play a key role in strengthening governance, risk management, and operational effectiveness across a portfolio of universities and higher education institutions. This role is designed for someone who thrives in a delivery‑focused environment—balancing rigorous audit standards with the practical realities of complex academic organisations. You’ll work closely with institutional leaders, academic departments, and professional services teams to deliver high‑quality audits that drive meaningful improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Audit Delivery & Planning

• Lead the end‑to‑end delivery of internal audits across multiple higher education clients, ensuring outputs are timely, accurate, and aligned with sector‑specific risks.
• Develop risk‑based audit scopes tailored to the unique operating models of universities, including research, teaching, student experience, estates, and regulatory compliance.
• Produce high‑quality audit reports that clearly articulate findings, root causes, and practical recommendations.
• Assess compliance with key regulatory frameworks such as OfS conditions of registration, UKVI requirements, research governance standards, and data protection obligations.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls across core university processes including:
• Student recruitment and admissions
• Research grant management
• Academic quality assurance
• Timetabling and curriculum delivery
• Estates and capital projects
• Financial management and procurement
• IT and cyber security
• Monitor emerging sector risks (e.g., financial sustainability, international student dependency, digital transformation, academic integrity).
