Leonardo is looking for Project Engineering Leads based at our Southampton Site on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). The position is permanent and involves leading parts of the Airborne Communication system, managing a multi‑disciplinary engineering team, and ensuring compliance with customer, contractual and legislative requirements.

Your Impact

Project Engineering Leads are responsible for the total engineering activity on a project or portfolio. They plan and manage engineering effort, maintain budgets, schedules and performance, and prepare status reports for governance. They also support business‑winning activities and cooperation with other functional leads.

What you’ll do

  • Manage a multi‑disciplined engineering team across multiple projects, delivering engineering output against time, cost and performance budgets.
  • Create clear engineering plans, establish milestones, and identify risks, opportunities and interdependencies.
  • Review current engineering positions on projects and adapt plans to mitigate cost, schedule or performance risks.
  • Prepare and communicate monthly engineering status reports to the line manager and Head of Engineering Projects.
  • Coordinate engineering input into bids as part of the business‑winning process.
  • Represent engineering on the IPT management team at weekly and monthly progress and reporting meetings.

What you’ll bring

  • Degree level education in engineering or a related science subject (essential).
  • Experience managing and/or leading multi‑disciplined engineering teams with responsibility for schedule and budget (essential).
  • Strong understanding and proven track record of engineering lifecycles and processes (essential).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (essential).
  • Experience in developing hardware electronics, firmware, mechanical and software products (essential).
  • Experience in developing communications systems (Highly desirable). 
  • Experience collaborating with external partners on development (Desirable).
  • Experience within the defence or aerospace industry (Desirable).

Security Clearance

This role is subject to pre‑employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Additional Personnel Security Controls referred to as National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, including eligibility for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
