Payroll Officer – Burgess Hill
Location: Burgess Hill, UK
Schedule: 35 hours per week (approx. 160 hours)
Contract: Fixed term, 12 months
Salary: Up to £35,089 per annum
Main Purpose
As part of a team processing payments for approximately 1,400 hourly‑paid staff and 400 salaried staff, this role collates monthly shifts and worked hours from our e‑rostering system and returns submitted from regional offices and services, ensuring the data is accurately processed through the payroll module, and provides high‑standard payroll services to our workforce.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
- Review employee timesheets and check payroll adjustments for starters, leavers, contractual changes, overtime and absence on the Dayforce System.
- Take responsibility for hourly payrolls in two legal entities in line with agreed timelines, preparing this ready for payroll commit.
- Assist services with accurate information and guidance regarding payroll matters and payments, based on company policies and guidelines.
- Calculate statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SAP, SPP), company sick pay, contracted hours, holiday, and all other types of payments.
- Ensure accurate deductions from pay – pension, attachment of earnings, student loans, medical insurance – and maintain detailed records as required.
- Record and maintain information for audit and other purposes.
- Assist with monthly reporting and collate documents and information as required; undertake payroll administration duties as necessary.
- Maintain the electronic filing system, updating leavers and new employees, archiving annual information and ensuring files stay current.
- Provide guidance on payroll to the business where appropriate.
- Address employees’ pay‑related concerns and provide accurate payroll information.
- Complete requests for pay‑related documents, including statements and verifications.
About You
- Proven experience in payroll processing: starters, leavers, payments and deductions.
- Strong knowledge of payroll principles, statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SAP, SPP) and reporting requirements.
- Experience working in a payroll environment, including collating and preparing data for processing.
- Proficient in IT systems, including payroll software, Excel, Word and email (experience with Dayforce or similar payroll systems desirable).
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to workload and changing priorities.
- Ability to provide support and guidance to administrators and service teams.
