Overview
Polypipe Building Services specializes in providing engineered above‑ground drainage and water supply systems. By leveraging off‑site fabrication it designs and delivers solutions to mechanical and public health engineers, M&E contractors, and local authorities. The company, well‑known for the Terrain brand, has delivered systems to commercial, high‑rise residential, healthcare, education, and leisure projects for over 50 years.
Role
The production shift leader will control all resources and processes within the Injection Moulding and Extrusion areas to ensure that safety, engagement, and production requirements are met. The leader will actively identify, document, and drive continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility.
Working Hours
Monday – Friday, weekly rotating shifts covering 6:00 am–2:00 pm, 2:00 pm–10:00 pm, and 10:00 pm–6:00 am.
Key Responsibilities
- Use KPI’s and SMART objectives to identify gaps in individual and team performance regarding safety, engagement, and OEE, and design improvement actions.
- Apply CI tools such as PDCA to ensure actions are executed, fine‑tuned, and embedded.
- Ensure daily and weekly production demand is met on time, in full, at the lowest cost, and with required quality levels.
- Plan labour requirements based on agreed production schedules and machine loadings.
- Ensure the production team follows Safe Systems of Work, reports near misses, and prevents potential incidents.
- Complete incident investigations using Alcumus reporting.
- Coordinate and chair daily production meetings and ensure effective shift handovers.
- Support and, when required, take ownership of key departmental improvement initiatives such as increased recycled material use.
- Maintain high levels of housekeeping in the two main production areas to keep the facility ready.
- Provide monthly reports to the Operations Manager on departmental performance, improvements, and significant exceptions.
- Display and discuss relevant KPI reports, such as OEE, with the teams.
- Handle personnel issues including attendance, inductions, conflicts, discipline, training, and overtime.
- Ensure each member of the Extrusion and Moulding team has a personal development plan monitored via the PDR process.
- Plan and coordinate effective work‑group meetings for each shift team and provide support when required.
- Encourage production teams to support and participate in all factory‑based CI projects, initiatives, and new process introductions.
Skills and Requirements
- Experience in production/operational leadership with a focus on driving CI in a production environment.
- Manufacturing background is essential.
- Experience in moulding or extrusion departments is advantageous.
- Ability to coach and influence to nurture an actively engaged culture.
- Good organisational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Qualified or experienced in running small to medium projects.
- Excellent time‑management, communication, and organisational skills.
- Demonstrate the ‘ideal team player’ virtues of Hungry, Humble & Smart.
- IOSH or similar qualification.
- Qualification relating to CI.
