At Arup we have an opportunity for a Senior Public Health Engineer, seeking technically challenging work on cutting‑edge projects in the science and healthcare sectors in the UK and worldwide; to join our established Building Engineering Team in London.
The Opportunity
You will play an active role in all stages of our projects from feasibility through to completion on diverse assignments across several sectors. You will actively produce design information, mentor junior staff, and review project deliverables. Working as part of multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will ensure seamless collaboration and contribute to innovative, sustainable solutions for our clients.
Responsibilities
- Report to the discipline leader and ultimately to the team leader, and develop innovative solutions to technical problems.
- Develop briefs and design concepts, and deliver them through to completion on site, managing the production of drawings and reports and preparing coordinating public‑health specifications.
- Undertake a sustainable approach to system design, including hot and cold water services, above‑ and below‑ground drainage, rainwater collection and disposal systems, water conservation, recycling, pollution control, and waste‑management treatment.
- Design fire suppression and gas systems, supervise and coordinate the work of others and collaborate with engineers from other disciplines.
- Act as part of a multi‑disciplinary building design team, attending meetings and communicating with clients to establish their needs.
- Manage project teams to ensure production of deliverables to agreed timelines and within budget.
- On smaller projects, act as the sole engineer in the design team and in contractor meetings.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team.
- Participate in contract administration, contractor query resolution, quantity surveying, and financial advice.
Qualifications
- Professional engineering qualification (preferably degree‑qualified, Chartered Engineer status or Incorporated Engineer) via an appropriate professional institution.
- Mention membership of SoPHE or CIPHE is desirable.
- Proven experience in project work, including above- and below‑ground public‑health and water services design, and fire protection systems.
- Extensive experience across a range of medium‑to‑large‑scale projects and/or building types.
- Strong interest in sustainable design.
- Ability to design and deliver public‑health engineering solutions on major and/or complex projects.
- Experience leading teams on multi‑disciplinary projects and working directly with clients and end users.
- Able to understand the balance of engineering priorities on different projects.
- Able to build successful client relationships quickly.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong commercial awareness.
- Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges.
- General understanding and application of computer skills.
- Fire suppression experience for tunnels will be beneficial.
