Role Overview

The Student Constable role is designed for candidates who will balance academic requirements with on-the-job training in a 24/7 policing service.

Training and Responsibilities

Over the first six months candidates undergo training covering legislation, processes, and technical skills such as Personal Safety Training, First Aid, and force computer systems. Subsequent duties include deployment to a uniformed response team under a rotating shift pattern that may involve days, afternoons, overnight shifts, and Public Holidays.

During the 2‑ or 3‑year probationary period, candidates must evidence operational competence through various policing incidents and achieve an academic qualification delivered by the force’s partner university, requiring 280 hours of study per year.

Routes to Join

Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA)

This three‑year professional degree apprenticeship culminates in a Degree in Professional Policing Practice. Applicants need a Level 3 qualification (two A‑levels or equivalent). If not holding Level 3, an online assessment in English and Maths is required prior to application. Accepted candidates must have a GCSE Grade A–C in Maths and English, or a Level 2 Equivalent, or complete the Essential Skills qualification during training. Course fees are covered by the police.

Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP)

For those holding any degree, this two‑year programme combines on‑the‑job learning with academic study and results in a Diploma in Professional Policing Practice. Applicants must possess a full manual driving licence. Course fees are covered by the police.

Additional Information

Assessment centres are scheduled for May 2026. The application process closes at 12:00 on 28th April 2026; all required tests must be completed beforehand. Most vacancies are in the Cardiff area. All candidates will undergo eligibility and vetting checks.

Applicants with relevant experience or job titles such as Police Officer, Community Police Officer, Trainee Police Officer, Community Safety Officer, Patrol and Supervision Officer, Operational Policing Team may also be considered.
