Location: Lingley Mere, Great Sankey, Warrington (onsite)

United Utilities plays a vital role in protecting public health and delivering safe, high‑quality water and wastewater services to the communities we serve. As we continue to strengthen our capability in this critical area, we’re looking for a Public Health Analyst who can bring scientific expertise, analytical rigour and confident decision‑making to a role with real societal impact.

This is an opportunity to join a respected FTSE 100 organisation where your work directly contributes to safeguarding public health, maintaining regulatory confidence and supporting the safe operation of essential water and wastewater systems.

The role

As a Public Health Analyst, you will provide timely, accurate and evidence‑based public health advice across the business, helping to minimise risks to customers and communities. Working across both water and wastewater operations, you’ll interpret complex data, assess emerging issues, and guide operational teams through incidents and public health challenges.

Following training, you will also join our WQPH on‑call rota, providing expert advice outside normal working hours to ensure we maintain the highest standards of water quality and public health protection.

Your work will help prevent illness, reduce regulatory risk and maintain trust in the services relied upon by millions.

What you’ll be doing

  • Building strong relationships with UKHSA, Local Authorities and other regional health professionals
  • Providing expert advice on water quality and public health risks during operational incidents
  • Reviewing and interpreting water quality data to support rapid, informed decision‑making
  • Assessing emerging issues and their potential impact on the business
  • Supporting delivery of the Drinking Water Safety Plan from source to tap
  • Identifying opportunities to improve team performance and operational resilience
  • Evaluating new research and industry developments to inform timely public health guidance
  • Helping develop and continuously improve procedures for managing public health incidents
  • Strengthening relationships with environmental and public health partners across the region
  • Conducting risk assessments and advising customers where additional precautions may be needed
  • Handling complex or escalated water quality cases with confidence and clarity
  • Identifying innovation opportunities to enhance communication, processes or ways of working

What you’ll bring

  • Degree‑level education (or equivalent experience) with a strong scientific background
  • Broad understanding of water industry operations and regulatory context
  • Awareness of source‑to‑tap processes and potential public health risks
  • Ability to interpret analytical results and large datasets using digital tools and GIS
  • Independent, objective thinking with the confidence to challenge decisions when needed
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to make timely decisions with limited information
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills
  • Ability to present complex information clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Resilience and professionalism when handling escalated or sensitive queries
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively

Why Join us?

This is a role with purpose, influence and visibility. You’ll be part of a supportive, expert team where your insights help protect public health and maintain the confidence of regulators, partners and the communities we serve.

Other

The role holder, following appropriate training, would be a member of the WQPH on call rota responsible for the provision of timely and accurate Water Quality and Public Health outside normal working hours.
