We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative ACP Registered Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist (CAP) with experience of working with children in a CAMHS setting. This post is suitable to both newly qualified clinicians and those with more experience. The post-holder will offer clinical sessions in the multi-disciplinary team of Newham CAMHS Emotional and Behavioural Care Pathway, which will include generic CAMHS assessment and treatment, brief work with the Under 5s, Short Term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and protected longer term clinical work within the Child Psychotherapy Team.

Main duties of the job

There is a long and well-respected provision of Child Psychotherapy in Newham. This team has developed and leads the Parent-infant Psychotherapy service (0-2’s) and the Under-Fives Pathway ( 2-5’s).The team of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists in Newham CAMHS currently comprises 5 ACP registered Child Psychotherapists of which three are qualified Parent Infant Psychotherapists ( one of whom is based on the neonatal unit once per week), and 2 Trainee Child Psychotherapists. We also have a psychodynamic child therapist and a clinical psychologist based in the under-fives pathway who provides psychodynamic interventions to the Family Hubs (Best start for Life). Members of the team have sessions based in a range of the clinic’s MDTs and outreach services.

Job responsibilities

1. To provide a high-quality evidence-based mental health and a specialist psychoanalytic child psychotherapy service to the children, young people and their and families attending Newham CAMHS.

2. As a member of the Emotional and Behavioural Team MDT, the postholder will ensure that interventions are undertaken on the principle of strong, collaborative partnership working between agencies. Post-holder will provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation, from a psychoanalytic perspective to other professionals, to assist in the formulation, diagnosis, management and treatment of clients.

3. To share with senior Child Psychotherapist colleagues in managing and developing the provision of Child Psychotherapy as an evidence-based resource within NCAMHS, working to ensure that, as a highly specialist provision, it is targeted to optimise outcomes for the children and young people for whom it is made available.

Person Specification

Education/ Qualification/ Training

  • oHonours degree oPostgraduate Diploma/ MA in Psychoanalytic Observational Studies or recognised equivalent oMinimum Masters level in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: Child and Adolescent. oRegistered member of ACP

Experience

  • oExperience of intensive and non-intensive psychodynamic interventions with individual children, parents and adolescents.
  • oExperience of offering psychoanalytic interventions employing brief models
  • oKnowledge and experience of working with Child Protection issues and mental health problems
  • oExperience and understanding of working with children and families from a diverse ethnic and cultural background, and families with a high level of deprivation
  • oExperience in some area of clinical specialisation

Knowledge and Skills

  • oKnowledge of psychoanalytic theory and an understanding of implication for clinical activity.
  • oKnowledge of recent legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management and mental health in relation to children, young people and their families.
  • oKnowledge, understanding and experience with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and families with a high level of deprivation
  • oAdvanced practical knowledge in area of specialisation.
