Salary: £60,000 – £75,000 depending on experience, plus benefits

A leading UK defence and technology organisation is expanding its digital hardware team and seeking a Senior FPGA Engineer to develop high-performance appliances for defensive cyber and intelligence applications. This hands-on role involves the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through delivery and support, for reliable, secure systems serving governments and armed forces.

The Role

You’ll work within a specialist team designing cutting-edge appliances from scratch, focusing on FPGA firmware alongside high-performance C, embedded software, custom PCBs, power, and thermal management. Expect active involvement in security-critical projects using predominately Altera FPGAs, with VHDL coding essential.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Implementing VHDL firmware for Altera FPGAs (Xilinx/Achronix familiarity a plus).
  • Handling high-bandwidth data processing with networking and DRAM interfaces.
  • Full lifecycle development: concept, design, delivery, and ongoing support.
  • Collaborating on hardware design for secure, maintainable cyber appliances.

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong VHDL experience and familiarity with modern FPGA toolchains (Altera preferred).
  • Proven high-bandwidth FPGA work, including networking/DRAM interfaces.
  • Background in security appliances or defence/cyber systems highly desirable.
  • Appreciation of hardware design principles.
  • UK security clearance eligibility and ability to meet nationality requirements; no regular remote working.

What’s On Offer

Competitive salary up to £75,000, performance-related rewards, comprehensive benefits, pension, and career development. Flexible onsite environment balancing professional demands with personal life in a supportive, inclusive culture.

Due to the sensitive nature of the work, candidates must be eligible for UK security clearance. Apply today for this exciting Senior FPGA Engineer opportunity!
