Private Sector Housing Officer
Location: Essex (Local Authority)
Contract length:6-Month (with a view to extend)
Rate:£45–£50 per hour
Working arrangements:Hybrid Working – 2–3 Days in the office, remainder wfh
A Local Authority in Essex is seeking an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer to join their team on a 6-month contract. This is a strong opportunity for an officer who can manage a varied caseload within private sector housing and confidently work across enforcement, licensing, and regulatory functions.
The council operates a hybrid working model, requiring attendance in the office approximately 2–3 days per week, with the remaining days working from home.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out HHSRS inspections of private sector residential properties
- Assessing and scoring hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System
- Investigating complaints relating to housing conditions and standards
- Taking informal and formal enforcement action in accordance with housing legislation
- Managing and supporting HMO licensing applications, inspections, and compliance
- Preparing for and supporting the team with regulatory changes associated with the upcoming Renters’ Rights Act, including its impact on private rented sector enforcement and standards
- Managing cases through to resolution, including liaison with landlords, tenants, and legal services where required
Essential Requirements
- Recent experience working within Private Sector Housing in a Local Authority
- Strong knowledge of HHSRS and housing enforcement legislation
- Experience undertaking property inspections and managing enforcement cases
- Experience or exposure to HMO licensing
- Ability to work 2–3 days per week on-site in Essex
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle insured for business use
This role is offering a competitive rate of £45–£50 per hour, depending on experience, with an initial 6-month contract and the possibility of extension.
