This is a technical leadership role within the HVDC Systems Engineering team, reporting to the Global Systems Engineering Leader.
Located at the HVDC Engineering Centre in Stafford, UK – as the successful candidate, you will contribute to the delivery of complex HVDC projects as part of a high‑performing and collaborative engineering team.
The role entails global responsibility for Systems Studies, with a primary focus on establishing and maintaining robust engineering processes, deploying effective tools, capturing and applying lessons learned, and driving competency development across the organization.
Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Globally accountable for Systems Studies focusing on processes, tools, lessons learned, and competency development.
- Ensure a safe working environment for the team – identify and evaluate EHS risks in own area and implement practical safety measures.
- Ensure delivery of HVDC Systems Studies scope is in line with plan (On Time Delivery – OTD) and budget.
- Ensure correct level of quality of the team’s deliverables (documentation & engineering product).
- Ensure best practice processes and tools for Systems teamwork scope and audit that processes are being followed, and drive continuous improvement in System Studies across global system study teams.
- Ensure a ‘Lean’ approach and culture within the team and drive the team to committed cost and time savings.
- Competency development and people review for the team.
- Lead the capture, implementation, and validation of project requirements.
- Effectively communicate technical issues throughout the organization, mainly with Principal Engineers.
- Lead team in solving challenging technical issues in HVDC System Studies.
- Proactive interaction with other engineering departments and regions for product definition.
- Foster an environment of knowledge sharing and mentoring within the team.
Candidate Profile
- The candidate will preferably be educated to degree level in a related Engineering or Science subject and be able to demonstrate they have the in‑depth experience and proven abilities to perform the role.
- Candidates with significant proven experience in the System Studies and/or HVDC system design is preferred covering both LCC and VSC technology solutions.
Previous experience preferred in the following areas:
- Management of technical issues both internally and with client.
- Significant integration with other stakeholders.
- An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills and a willingness to share the knowledge – essential qualities.
Qualifications & Characteristics
- Educated to degree level in Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree.
- Take a pro‑active approach to ensuring Health & Safety is paramount, including conducting Risk Assessments.
- EHS compliance capability.
- Prior experience of people management.
- Prior experience of electrical transmission industry.
- Knowledge of HVDC / FACTS System Studies, System Design, Equipment & report checking and approving.
- Knowledge of power system and harmonic studies.
- Requirements capture, compliance and Verification & Validation experience.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent Organisation and leadership skills.
- Attention to process and detail to ensure quality of team deliverables.
- Accurate planning and drive to achieve on time delivery.
- Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Desire to challenge the way we work and seek improvements.
