Assistant Project Manager – Land Team

We are looking for a talented Assistant Project Manager to join our Project Management Office (PMO) function and support the delivery of numerous projects within WSP’s Land Team. Our clients are leading names in the aviation, highway, rail, energy & water industries, who rely on WSP to provide them with expert Land Assembly advice to ensure their large‑scale infrastructure projects get off to the best possible start. We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Project Manager who can effectively support a diverse team while staying client interface and the delivery of their projects.

Supporting a diverse team of technical specialists, our Assistant Project Managers are responsible for supporting the delivery of the project and helping to ensure the objectives are clearly defined, appropriately resourced and successfully delivered within the agreed time, cost, and quality constraints. They will have a role in project and commercial governance and will work with external and internal stakeholders to ensure that project success criteria are managed and realised. They will provide leadership support on their projects and provide mentorship and guidance to junior members of the PMO where required.

A little more about your role

  • Management of the project scope and change control process.
  • Management and review of project programme timelines including monitoring of critical path, resource pinch points, delivery of milestones, reporting internally.
  • Collaborating with the client teams to provide regular updates and manage expectations.
  • Management of project budget, financial performance and associated reporting.
  • Forecasting, cost to complete and EVM reporting to client (using client specified method and processes where specified).
  • Support the management of project risks and opportunities in line with client and business expectations.
  • Support the management of project resources and costs to ensure alignment between forecasts and actuals.
  • Support the implementation of scheduling controls to ensure the project is appropriately resourced to meet the demands of the programme.
  • Input to the overall management of project controls using both WSP and client systems.
  • Ensure that quality procedures are being adhered to through discussion with technical delivery teams.
  • Ensure safety, health and wellbeing of the project team.
  • Provide input to opportunities and bids as required by the business.
  • Identification of process improvements that would have positive effects on delivery.
  • Contribute to development of junior project managers both locally and across the UK business.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate

  • Ability to interrogate, question and challenge information.
  • Ability to coordinate the submission of highly detailed deliverables to predetermined deadlines.
  • Understanding of project management, project controls and procedures normally associated with a major project.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Project and Word.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with colleagues, landowners and client at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrates basic financial literacy, with the ability to understand and manage simple project financial information.

Desirable

  • Project Management experience and working knowledge of the land consents and planning process.
  • Pursuing membership of a Professional Institution.
  • APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or Project Fundamentals Qualifications.
  • Desirable but not required: Experience that has provided you with an understanding of land use and ownership (Geography, Land/Estate management, Surveying & agricultural).

Location

Our Scotland team consists of land consultants, property specialists, and utility/topographical surveyors working across our Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth offices. We work closely with over 300+ Land colleagues across the UK, Ireland and India delivering land services on a variety of projects across the energy, water, road, rail and active-travel sectors. Our clients develop major highway, rail, energy and renewable infrastructure projects which impact privately owned land. We are the largest land referencing business in the UK and Ireland, with recent high‑profile projects including A9 Dualling, SSEN and various onshore renewable schemes.

As part of our Land team, you will combine office, home and on‑site working to deliver land consenting projects, ensuring the validity, accuracy and auditability of information collected. You will work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment, working with a team of Land Consultants to deliver the necessary information required to identify, notify, engage and gain access to lands and secure required consents with landowners affected by infrastructure projects.

We work locally, making a difference to projects across the whole of Scotland as well as nationally with other WSP teams, using our in‑house land information and consultation databases alongside GIS systems, with a focus on innovation and quality. Our colleagues are from a diverse range of career backgrounds including estate management, forestry, agriculture, project management, liaison officers, site supervision, land agency and more. The diverse range of skills all combine to provide a full and comprehensive skill set.

The role can be based in one of our offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Perth with the flexibility of hybrid working between one of these locations and from home.
