Technical Author – Dorchester, Dorset

Do you have the technical writing expertise to turn complex engineering data into clear, high-quality publications?

We are looking on behalf of TKMS ATLAS UK for a Technical Author to join their Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) team, supporting the delivery of critical documentation across a range of innovative maritime programmes. The team is responsible for producing and maintaining high-quality technical publications and illustrations that support complex naval systems. This role plays a key part in ensuring products are supported effectively throughout their lifecycle, contributing to safety, usability and operational success.

What you’ll do

This role is central to translating engineering knowledge into structured, user‑focused technical documentation. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver accurate, timely and compliant publications that support cutting‑edge naval technologies.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Producing high‑quality Technical Publications and supporting illustrations
  • Managing and reporting on documentation tasks across multiple projects
  • Supporting bid and proposal activity, including cost and schedule estimation
  • Collaborating with Product Managers, Technical Leads and ILS Managers
  • Working with Safety & Environmental Engineers to ensure compliance and accuracy
  • Creating and maintaining structured content using industry standards where applicable
  • Developing illustrations, line drawings or animations to support technical content
  • Ensuring documentation is delivered to agreed time, cost and quality targets
  • Engaging with internal stakeholders to gather and validate technical information
  • Occasional travel to other UK sites as required

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong technical writing skills, with excellent English grammar and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to a range of audiences
  • Experience producing technical publications and/or illustrations
  • Understanding of engineering or scientific principles
  • Familiarity with tools such as MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Awareness of structured authoring standards (e.g. S1000D, XML/SGML, IETPs) is beneficial
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
