Key Responsibilities
What does a Systems Development Manager do at Amazon?
- Lead a team of engineers that own large portions of the architecture with real impact.
- Set strategic direction and long‑term vision for the team.
- Operate under the SRE model, solving problems of scale through automation.
- Mentor, hire, and develop engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Investigate root causes of customer issues, metric trends, and operational incidents, and collaborate with top engineers.
- Champion high‑quality engineering practices and end‑to‑end system ownership.
- Advise on system architecture and recommend solutions aligned with best practices.
- Explore new ways to improve operations when strategy is not defined.
- Guide teams in simplifying and reinventing systems, processes, and tools to better the customer experience.
- Ensure out‑of‑hours support is efficient and painless for customers.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders and influence multi‑team initiatives.

Basic Qualifications
- Experience managing system or software development teams.
- Hands‑on experience in systems engineering and administration of networking, storage, and operating systems.
- Experience in agile software development methodology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of professional software engineering and full software development life cycle practices, including coding standards, architecture, code reviews, source control, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence.
- Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals such as networking, storage, and operating systems.
- Experience with Agile practices (Kanban, continuous delivery, etc.).
- Experience with AWS platforms, services, and design patterns.
