Role – Operations Manager

Location: London (Thames Water region)

The Operations Manager will head up a team of Senior Project Manager & Construction Managers to deliver a programme of works across the Thames Water region. You will be part of the ongoing regional growth and will therefore be responsible for the development and further recruitment of the project delivery team to serve the region. The role will also include upward and downward reporting within Galliford Try and to the client, providing clear and precise direction at all levels.

The Operations Manager is accountable for all commercial aspects of the programme of work. Assisted by the Commercial team you will develop strong contractual and financial controls to deliver rigorous cost control and cash management for each project within your programme of work.

Ideally, you will be based in or around the Thames Water area and have the opportunity to travel across multiple sites/projects in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for all activities of project & programme delivery, ensuring that health & safety, programme, design, procurement, financial control and site activities are managed to the highest standards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Influence the operational delivery structure to drive outstanding performance.
  • Align to the client’s direction and needs, interpret contract commitments and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Ensure key deliverables within each stage of the project and programme are administered to the highest quality.
  • Ensure that the proper interpretation of the design briefs is established and the delivered solutions meet and exceed the expectations of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote strong H&S behaviours.
  • Develop strong team‑working relationships.
  • Provide a vision and define clear team roles, responsibilities and objectives whilst providing a hands‑on approach to supporting the Project Team.
  • Manage people, resources and relationships to ensure effective delivery of programmes and projects.
  • Ensure all projects adhere to Galliford Try’s high‑quality standards and instill a right‑first‑time approach.
  • Build trust with customers and stakeholders, keeping them updated on progress and acting upon feedback.
  • Empower others to innovate and drive continuous improvement.
  • Support the designated individual in ensuring temporary works are followed.
  • Make sound, evidence‑based decisions, assessing risks and identifying opportunities.
  • Encourage commercial challenge at all times.
  • Lead our approach to collaborative planning to drive outperformance.
  • Ensure compliance with internal and client system & procedures.

Qualifications

  • Industry applicable ONC/HNC/B.Eng. or NVQ equivalent.
  • H&S qualifications.
  • IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety & Health) or CITB 5‑Day Site Safety Management (SMSTS) qualification.
  • CSCS card.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within the waste and/or water industries.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft packages.
  • Dedicated team player who can also work independently.
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload and demonstrate time management to comply with deadlines.
  • Capability to work in a busy environment under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills (email/phone/face‑to‑face).
  • Possess a “can‑do” attitude and provide support to other members of the team as required.
