We are seeking an exceptional and innovative experienced senior leader to assist in the effective running of one of the largest secondary special schools in the country.
Rumworth School is a highly regarded Local Education Authority maintained special school in Bolton with an excellent reputation for providing outstanding provision for all students.
We currently cater for around 365 students, expanding to 400 by September 2026. Students, aged 11-19, all have an EHCP and include a range of SEND, from moderate to severe learning difficulties, complex needs, neurodiversity, hearing and visual impairment, physical disability and social, emotional and mental health needs.
Responsibilities
- Lead the pastoral and behavioural management for students aged 11-16 across KS3 & KS4, overseeing around 30 form classes.
- Collaborate with the middle leadership team, teachers, instructors and teaching assistants to ensure a holistic pastoral curriculum and enrichment opportunities.
- Develop and implement pastoral initiatives, drawing on expertise in positive behavioural management and physical intervention (e.g., Team Teach).
- Support the school’s ethos of “Start with the young person” and promote confidence, resilience and independence among pupils.
- Engage with families as Family Liaison Officers and maintain strong communication.
Qualifications and Experience
- Senior leadership experience, ideally as an Assistant Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher in a mainstream or special secondary or primary setting.
- Proven experience in developing pastoral programmes and in supporting SEND students.
- Knowledge of curriculum differentiation and external accreditation delivery (GCSEs, ASDAN, BTEC, Functional Skills, entry‑level certification).
- Experience with a differentiated curriculum model for Years 8‑11, accommodating both formal and compact proficiency pathways.
- Familiarity with the bespoke pathways (Pathway to Employment, Pathway to Independence) and transitional support for KS5 pupils.

Rumworth School operates a Foundation Year with specialist rooms and tutors in subjects such as Science, Design Technology, Forest School, Art, Music, PE and ICT. Years 8‑11 follow a differentiated model with options for a modified mainstream approach or consolidation of basic skills in a based class. All students access external accreditation at the end of KS4 and during KS5.
